Gagauz Autonomy

ATU Gagauzia is a territorial autonomy with a population of 122 thousand inhabitants, created in 1994 in order to preserve the unique culture and to ensure the rights of the Gagauz population in the Republic of Moldova.

The special status of Gagauzia is provided for by organic law and guaranteed by the Constitution. It gives the region a certain level of self-government, allowing it to deal independently with political, economic and cultural issues.

Gagauzia is governed by its representative and executive bodies: the Bashkan, the Executive Committee and the People’s Assembly.
