On 24-25 November 2024, under the auspices of CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, representatives from the legislature of the Autonomous Territorial Unit (ATU) Gagauzia and the central authorities of the Republic of Moldova were invited to an Informal Dialogue Meeting in Istanbul, Türkiye. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss issues related to restoring dialogue between the centre and the autonomy.
The Informal Dialogue Meeting was organised outside of the margins of the Parliamentary Working Group on Gagauzia to evaluate the current situation, the relationship between the centre and the autonomy and consideration of the way ahead to the restoration of dialogue at the Institutional level.
During the course of open and frank discussion, all the participants stressed the need for swift restoration of institutional dialogue between the centre and the autonomy in order to address the needs of the population of the autonomy as a factor to safeguard stability in the Republic of Moldova.
It was acknowledged that in order to develop full institutional dialogue there was a need to rebuild the level of trust between the parties and it was agreed to convene another meeting, in the coming period, in order to identify issues that could be addressed in order to ensure the effectiveness of institutional dialogue in the short and medium term.
CMI is an independent Finnish organization working in the field of conflict prevention and conflict resolution through dialogue and mediation. CMI was founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Martti Ahtisaari in 2000. In the Republic of Moldova, the CMI facilitates an informal dialogue process between the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia on the platform of the Parliamentary Working Group on Gagauzia, in the framework of the ” Gagauzia Dialogue” process, with the support of Sweden.
